My interest in art has me following a lot of artists on Twitter. I kept seeing references to the Smithsonian’s push to remove a video art piece by David Wojnarowicz. Today I finally got to see the video.
To be honest I’m surprised it lives on at YouTube, because it wouldn’t really conform to their guidelines either.
But like most things in life I think it works better when you appreciate the context. Artpositive.org writes:
The Hide/Seek show is an important, groundbreaking exhibit about sexual identity and we urge you to see what’s still on display. When he died in 1992, Wojnarowicz, an artist and writer with AIDS, left a body of work about the disease that remains unrivaled for its power and beauty.
